I don’t really have that much to say about anything today. I just feel bored, and kind of bloggy, so here we go…

I guess the biggest thing that is going on right now is the whole health care reform business. I’ll admit right off the bat that I don’t know that much about it. If you know me, you know that I am so left wing  I wont make a right turn; so I listen to our democratic political leaders for their viewpoints. I also have to weigh the moral issues as well. What would Jesus do if he was presented with this health care bill? Would he say “You mean I have to give part of my meager but hard-earned living as a carpenter so sick people that I don’t even know can get help?” No, I think  not. The picture of Jesus I have in my head would probably remind you of the story of the good Samaritan.

Will some people take advantage of this? Absolutely. But most of these people who will benefit from this reform actually need it. The proof of this can be found at the actual signing of the bill. Most probably noticed that there was a boy present. He was there representing the people who need this health care reform.

His name is Marcelas Owens, and he’s eleven years old. He lost his mom to Pulmonary Hypertension when she was only 27 years old. She was a shift leader at a Jack in the Box restaurant, and ended up being let go because she started missing work because of her illness; and therefore lost her healthcare. This hits way too close to home for me, because the same thing happened to me. My illness isn’t life-threatening by any means, but it affects every aspect of my life. So much so that Social Security considers me disabled. This shouldn’t happen. Ever.

I think what chaps my ass so much about the people that oppose this is that they are, or claim to be, staunch Christians. I thought Christ’s golden rule was to love your neighbor as yourself. What happened to that? I know I’m guilty of not following this rule all of the time, but I try not to make a public display of it.

I’ve seen this as a status update on FaceBook several times already.

“We’re going to be gifted with a health care plan written by a committee whose chairman says he does not understand it, passed by a Congress that hasn’t read it but exempts themselves from it,to be signed by a president who also hasn’t read it and who smokes,with funding administered by a treasury chief who didn’t pay …his taxes,to be overseen by a surgeon general who is obese, & financed by a country that’s broke”.

I have two problems with this.

1) I smoke. A lot. I know it isn’t healthy, but it’s my decision, and it’s my business. It brings a little happiness to my little world. If you don’t smoke, I respect you and don’t smoke around you. So leave it the hell alone. If you feel the need to criticize a smoker, why don’t you shove another cheeseburger in your face and shut the hell up. Same damned thing.

2) I’m a chunky girl. I’ve been that way for twenty years now. On behalf of all the overweight people of the world, shut up. You have no business criticizing a person who has been through decades of higher learning and practice for being overweight. You’re just scraping the bottom of the insult barrel, and it doesn’t make you look good.

This last section wasn’t very nice, I know, but someone had to say it.

. . .and yes Joe Biden, it is a big fucking deal.

My Heritage: The Conflict March 27, 2010

Everyone on my facebook knows (from St. Patrick’s Day) that I am very much Irish. Both sides of my family, numerous lines on each side. I’ve even tracked the Connally side of my family all the way back to County Donegal, as they moved to Galway to catch the boat set to land in Virginia to make a new start in the mid 1600’s. Yes, I’m a nerd.

The next generation of Connallys moved into North Carolina, and my 5th great grandfather gave a lot of land to what would soon be University of North Carolina Chapel Hill. He also worked as a recruiter in the American Revolution, and his son John William was a Sergeant.

My 3rd great uncle owned The Green Bottom Inn and Tavern that sat on what is now part of the Alabama A&M Campus in Huntsville. Andrew Jackson, yes, “Ol’ Hickory”, used to race his horses there, and just happened to be there the night before Alabama became a state in 1819.

Needless to say, I am proud of my rich heritage.

The other big bloodline I have is Cherokee, as do many Southerners. Family tales tell that my great (times I’m not so sure) grandfather; who was white, hid my great (again I’m not so sure how many times over) grandmother (Cherokee) in a cave during The Trail of Tears to keep officers from finding her and making her comply with the forced migration. Some Marshall County natives don’t realize there was a camp set up at Gunter Landing to ship off the Cherokee via the river.

You’re probably wondering why I’m blathering about my heritage. A lot of times I’m conflicted about it. Whose side do I take? The immigrants who are responsible for making our great America what it is today; Or, the Natives who were here since God was a fetus. Or, do I just shrug and say “This was just what was in the cards for us.”?

All of this is because of my stumbleupon.com find for the day. I think it’s brilliant.

An old Cherokee chief was teaching his grandson about life…

“A fight is going on inside me,” he said to the boy.
“It is a terrible fight and it is between two wolves.

“One is evil – he is anger, envy, sorrow, regret, greed, arrogance, self-pity, guilt, resentment, inferiority, lies, false pride, superiority, self-doubt, and ego.

“The other is good – he is joy, peace, love, hope, serenity, humility, kindness, benevolence, empathy, generosity, truth, compassion, and faith.

“This same fight is going on inside you – and inside every other person, too.”

The grandson thought about it for a minute and then asked his grandfather,
“Which wolf will win?”

The old chief simply replied,
“The one you feed.”

My Michael March 23, 2010

This is the child I sponsor through Compassion International. You can sponsor one too here. His name is Michael Essel. He’s seven, and he brings be a lot of joy, even though he’s thousands of miles away in Ghana. He lives in an HIV/AIDS affected area, but luckily he isn’t infected by either.

A few weeks after getting his picture and basic info, I got a paper filled out by a social worker of things he had to say. I think it’s one of the most precious things ever.

He lives with his grandmother, Patience. He has two brothers and three sisters, and his best friend’s name is Kow Dadzie. His favorite game is football (soccer), and his favorite song is “God, You are So Good”. His hobby is running, and his favorite food is rice. His favorite color is red, and he loves the story of the birth of Jesus.

He asked me, through his social worker, how many friends I have, and what kind of work I do. He asks that I pray for him and his family, that they will be healthy and strong. He says he will always remember me in his prayers, and ask for God to bless me with more blessing.

He drew me pictures in his own hand of an orange, a mango, a house or barn, and something I’m not so sure of, but it sure is cute. However my favorite part is his message to me it says he says he really thanks me for choosing him as my sponsor child. May the good lord bless me and fill my barns in Jesus’ name. How sweet is that?

I’m not writing this to make people think I’m an awesome person, or to show off. I write about things I am passionate about, and he is one of them. Also, I write to let you know that if you have an extra less than 40 dollars a month, you too can do this, and provide school, food, clean water, and medicine to a child that really needs it. Good News and Simple Pleasures. . . March 18, 2010

Week two of the diet has begun and is on track. Weigh in day was yesterday and I lost four pounds during week one, which makes me very happy. If I keep losing at that speed I will meet my goal sooner than expected. However, if I can just lose a little every week, I’ll be happy with that too.

This time around feels different. For some reason it is finally ingrained in my tiny skull that I’m not going to lose this weight over night. I’m also not going to dump a massive amount in a short amount  of time. It took a few years to put it all on. Luckily I don’t think it is going to take that long to take it off, but it’s also not gonna magically go *poof* in just a couple weeks. So, my new diet philosophy is something like, even if I lose one pound a week, it’s one pound less than I weighed last week. So downward on the scale and onward I go.

Today for lunch I made deviled eggs. YUM. They were awesomeness. Also, other than the egg itself; fat free. I’ve been eating boiled eggs like crazy since I’ve been on this diet. Today I wanted a little something different.  They were. . . eggscellent. 😉 Here’s the recipe.

* Boil your eggs the night before you want to make them. (See bottom on how to boil perfect peelable eggs.)
* To make them peel like little jewels, tap both ends on the counter, then tap around the sides about four times. Tapping the ends cracks that little air pocket, and gives you a good starting place.
* Before you start peeling, roll them in between your hands like you would a lemon before you juice it, just not that hard.
*Peel away!
* Cut em all in half, and take a fork and plunk the yolks out into a bowl. Put whites on a plate, and set them (whites) aside.
* Chop up pickles and onions very finely. Think grains of rice small. Use as much as you like. I’d recommend that if you were doing a full dozen to chop about a quarter of a small-medium sized onion. I used red, because they’re my favorite for fresh foods. I guess chop up about 3-4 smallish pickles. Not the gherkins, but not the big ones.
* Take a fork and smoosh up the egg yolks, pickles and onions until the  yolks don’t have big chunkies anymore, and the pickles and onions are mixed in well.
* Using your best judgement, add enough fat free ranch dressing that the egg yolk mixture is *almost* wet enough. The best method is adding a bit at a time and mix in between until you’ve got it right.
* Add enough mustard to make up for that little bit of dryness left.
*Mix and smoosh until everything is blended well.
* Go get that plate of egg whites, and take a teaspoon, and scoop out the yolk mixture into the yolk holes in the whites.
* Sprinkle on some black pepper and paprika. Use some salt if you like, but they don’t need it. This means a lot coming from me because I love me some salt.
* Eat ’em til you’re sick, or share them with friends and family.

However, you can’t make deviled eggs if your boiled eggs are all busted, and the peeling is all stuck, and you’ve ripped off the first layer until the yolk is showing, and. . .and GRRRRRR! x_x. . .needless to say this has happened to me more than once. So I learned the best way to boil them.

(1) Put uncooked eggs in a sauce pot and cover them with lukewarm water (oops, I forgot to say add a splash of vinegar, it makes them peel easier, but it’s ok if you don’t have any on hand.). (2) Put them on the stove on medium heat (covered). (3) Let them sit there on medium until the water is really hot and about to boil (10 mins or so). (4) Turn them up to medium high until they get to a big rolling boil. (5) When they get to that big rolling boil, take them off they eye, and let them sit covered for 20 mins. (6) Drain off the hot water, and run some cool water over them. (7) Drain that off and stick them in the fridge. They’ll be ready to peel and eat in a couple hours.

 

Change of Location and Day Three of NutriSystem March 13, 2010

Hello everyone, and welcome to my first wordpress.com post! I’m sorry for mixing things up, but I had too many google accounts going on; it was just getting too confusing as to what I was signed onto at any given time. So, welcome. I hope I’m added to all of your readers, cause I love y’all. 😉

So, this is day three of the NutriSystem diet. It’s had big ups and big downs. I’ll go ahead and discuss the downs first.

So, when it comes to instructions and directions, I’m pretty much a dude. Seriously. Needless to say my metric crap ton of food came with a good sized manual. Did I read it? Nope. Should I have? Absolutely.  I was under the impression that you eat the packaged meals with a fruit at breakfast, and veggies with lunch and dinner, and you sit back and get skinny. I wasn’t wrong about that, but there was oh so much more I should have been eating. I was so hungry I felt like I had fungus growing in my stomach, and was quite peckish. I was thinking “Great, I’m miserable, and just wasted 350 bones on this cause I’m not gonna be able to do it.”  Out of desperation, I flipped through the manual. Turns out I had been depriving myself of all added proteins I was supposed to be eating, and a whole other snack. D’oh!  So, days one and two were pretty horrible. I immediately boiled half a dozen eggs.

So today was like a whole new day. Added an egg to my nutrisystem cereal. . .well not into it, cause that’s gross. You know what I mean.  That little bit of protein made all the stinking difference.

I did a double no-no today though, but I think it ended up being encouraging instead of a bad idea. Curiosity got the best of me, and I weighed. Weigh days are supposed to be every Wednesday. Turns out, I’m already down two lbs. After breakfast, with clothes on too. In three days. Actually two and a half at that point. I told my mom, and she said last night she could tell my tummy looked smaller already. I’m not dumb enough to think that it’s actually fat gone. . .just my body getting rid of junk. . .but still. . .it’s weight off my body that was making me look bigger, so who cares, right?

So, if I’m already two lbs down, I think my goal of losing 15 by my birthday (May 17th) is pretty reachable.

On a total random note, I’m burning opium incense, and it smells heavenly.
